Sadie and Frank loved Judaism and kept a kosher home. One year, they took Randi to Florida for a week long vacation. Randi brought her siddur and led Kabbalat Shabbat Services for them on the Friday evening of that trip; ensuring that even when they were away from their home, faith prevailed. Judaism was a part of Sadie’s spirituality, it was important for her to bring the challah and dessert from the kosher bakery in Brooklyn on Jewish Holidays. She celebrated at her daughter’s home surrounded by her loved ones in Howard Beach. In addition to the festival challah, she always showed up with a bag of egg kichel for her first-born granddaughter, Randi. Grandma knew how much Randi loved egg kickel and she always ensured that she came with a bag in hand.
Sadie Maltz, like her husband Frank, left this world too soon. Sadie was devastated when the love of her life, Frank, passed away in 1984. In 1997, Sadie was driving and an ambulance driver that was not heading to an emergency at that time went through a red light and crashed into Sadie’s car. Sadie was so broken-hearted by the loss of her beloved Frank that she seemed to lose her will to fight to live: she passed away in the hospital shortly after the accident. Although Randi’s wife, Mickey Dickenson, never met Grandma Sadie, her presence along with Grandpa Frank’s continues to be a part of Randi and Mickey’s home. Randi and Mickey hope that the way they live their lives will be a blessing to her memory. Randi and Mickey continue to light memorial candles for her and attend CBST services on her yortzeit to say Mourner’s Kaddish. Grandma Sadie’s love, teachings, and memories continues to shape their lives. Sadie Maltz’s memory continues to be a blessing.
